IDA Organized a Symposium Entitled “The Prospective Vision of Establishing Logistics Service Centers in the Suez Canal Region

The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) organized on 1-1-2011 a symposium in IDA branch at the New Cairo under the title of “The Prospective Vision of Establishing Logistics Service Centers in the Suez Canal region. The symposium was attended by IDA Chairman, Eng. Ismail Najdi, Mr. Hussein Othman, head of the Central Department of Investment Policies & International Agreements in IDA & the Dean of the College of international Transport and Logistics, Dr. Khaled Hanafy. The symposium started with opening speech by IDA Chairman who affirmed the importance of the Suez Canal through focusing on the labor-intensive projects which in turn will provide about 1 million job opportunities by the end of the plan period in 2027.

IDA Chairman added that East Port Sid port had been established on the North entrance of the Suez Canal which contains many container ports & an industrial zone was allocated for these ports on an area of 87 km2 to establish trade zones & logistics centers, besides establishing warehouses for serving the international trade. Moreover, another port was established on the South entrance of the Suez Canal for which an economic zone was allocated & the Government spent more than L.E100 billion for the Suez Canal region’s infrastructure represented in establishing ports, infrastructure, power stations, water plants and airports & roads network. Accordingly, this zone becomes one of the zones able to attract Egyptian, Arab & foreign investments.

The symposium was concluded by many recommendations, the most important of which are::

First: in the Administrative Field:

  • Revamping facilities, companies & services related to ships affiliated to the Suez Canal Authority.
  • Activating labor-intensive industries such as shipbuilding on scientific, commercial & competitive basis, linking wages to productivity, encouraging the private sector, in addition to training the Egyptian labors through the training centers.
  • Encouraging the international companies to invest in the bunkering field through establishing floating storage platforms in both the Red & Mediterranean Seas.
  • Developing and modernization the public warehouses and management systems.
  • Establishing a supreme council with an authority to oversee & follow up the implementation of the proposed plans set to develop the Suez Canal region according to an agreed schedule.
  • The necessity of holding an international conference during 2012 to activate the recommendations of shipbuilding strategy in Egypt with the aim to conclude to the recommendations to be implemented during the next period according to an agreed schedule on the short, medium & long terms.

Second: in the Logistic Services Field:

  • Developing both Ain Sukhna & East Port Said ports
  • Necessity of activating the maritime logistics services through the participation in forming:
    • Navigation companies to operate ships & establish an arsenal for shipyards.
    • Shipping agencies and loading & unloading companies & ships supplies.
    • Companies specialized in manufacturing & maintaining containers in addition & establishing containers handling stations.
    • Companies specialized in road, maritime & air transport in addition to insurance companies.
  • Exploiting the industrial zone located at the South of the hub port at the East port Said in establishing zones specialized in the industries of maritime, electronic, textile & logistic feeding industries for shipyards & producing alternatives for imported components.
  • Providing the suitable investment climate that helps in attracting international, Arab & local investments.
